Inspiration #10: Shu

Shu is a Graphic Designer living in New York City, who I came across on Instagram because of her amazing makeup looks and tutorials. I want her to be recognised for her work and the effort she puts in her videos because it is truly amazing. So, let’s get to know her!

Hi Shu, thank you for doing this interview with me. I came across your Instagram page several months ago and I was just blown away by your beauty. You’re an extremely pretty girl and I would love for everyone else to get to know you a little bit better. So tell me about yourself? What do you do and where you’re from?

Hey, love! Thank you so much for having me as your guest interviewee and for your lovely compliments. You are a stunner yourself, Alanna! Well, my full name is Shulaing Aw but everyone calls me Shu. I’m a Graphic Designer living in NYC.

When did you start taking your makeup creations to YouTube and Instagram?

I started creating YouTube videos & Instagram makeup videos about a few years back. I don’t exactly remember when but that’s because I’m not very consistent with my uploads.

Who inspired you to go down the Beauty Enthusiast pathway?

Honestly, I was truly inspired after watching Michelle Phan. She was the first makeup guru that I began watching religiously. Her makeup videos are very professionally done. I was in design major at the time during my college years so I was most fascinated by the content creation of makeup youtube videos in particular. But I’m curious about everything in nature honestly. I’ve always loved makeup ever since my sweet aunt gave me my very first “red” lipstick as a birthday gift at age 8.

What would you like to achieve with this? Is it something you do for fun or would you want a career out of it?

I don’t have any set goals yet. It would be awesome to have the privilege to make a career out of it if there were opportunities given. I wouldn’t hesitate! As of right now, I truly appreciate for the followers that I have. I’m surprised at the amount of followers that I have now actually. I honestly thought no one would discover me, nor bother watching my videos. I’m blessed to have sisters, friends and a mom who supports me in what I do. They are definitely my support system.

You also do Graphic Design, is that right? Are you studying it or is that your fulltime career?

Yes! I’m a full-time Graphic Designer at a company called Maytex in midtown NYC. I’m also a part-time Production Designer for RR Donnelley & Son.

Most people do not know you’re Burmese, but are you mixed with anything else? Were you born in Burma or in the States? And would you love to visit Burma anytime soon?

I’m Burmese and half Chinese. I was born and raised in Myanmar. I came to the states at age 10. The last time I revisited Burma was the summer of 2005, so it has been a long while now. I definitely miss site-seeing the ancient parts of Burma.

Now let’s have some fun and I’ll ask you 5 random questions.

1. What do you dip a chicken nugget in? And do you eat chicken nuggets? I love McDonald’s chicken nuggets! I would switch between BBQ flavour & sweet and sour one.

2. A movie that you can watch over and over again?  – This is a tough question to answer because I’m a cinema fanatic! I would say between Edward Scissorhands and Interview with the Vampire.

3. Afraid of heights? – I’m not deathly afraid of heights. I’ve done steep hiking and zip-lining. I would love to do skydiving as well someday.

4. Do you sing in the car? – Singing in the car is the best part of driving!

5. First concert you ever went to?  – My very first concert was “RZarni’s” a Burmese concert held here in NYC. I would love to go an American concert someday.

Any advice for people wanting to start sharing their makeup tips?

My biggest tip would be knowing your own skin type & tone. Once you discover that, everything else will fall into place.

Thank you again for taking the time to do this interview with me, it has been a pleasure!

Thank you so much as well, Alanna for taking your time setting up this fun interview. I honestly am grateful for having you reach out to me! The pleasure is all mines as well Hun!
